Analog Dial Thickness Gauges have jaws with steel measuring contact pins, handles and levers. When the lever is released after the material has been inserted between the contact pins, the pins adhere to the surface of the material and the measured thickness value is recorded on the analog dial by the position of the needle relative to the dial scale on the dial face. The pin closing approach when the lever is released ensures reading accuracy and consistency as the instrument applies a uniform reading pressure to the material surface which is the same for each user.

The edges of contact measurement probes are often rounded so that the probes can be pressed together against the surface of the material without damaging or marking the surface.

Types of thickness gauges

• ● Material thickness gauge- These gauges mechanically measure material thickness. Close the calibrated fixture around the sample until it contacts both sides of the material. This is a process similar to that of micrometers.
• ● Film thickness gauge- It is used to measure the thickness of a coating applied to a surface. These are called coating thickness gauges.
• ● Wire and sheet metal thickness gauge- A third type of thickness gauge is a simpler mechanical device used to measure the thickness of wire and sheet metal.
