Introduction

A Thickness Gauge or Tester is an instrument that measures the thickness of tablets or capsules in millimeters. This is a simple, inexpensive handheld electronic thickness gauge that is especially useful for press operators.

This gauge is practical because it is easy to use and has excellent dust resistance. It is useful for measuring the wall and tip thickness of capsules, as well as the diameter of tablets and pills.

An electronic (digital) gauge functions like an analog thickness gauge, but replaces the needle display with a digital display. Thickness readings can be displayed directly on the digital display without interpreting measurements based on the position of the needle relative to the scale on the dial face.

Advantages of Thickness Gauge

• ● Knowing the thickness of the tablet you are making is important for replicating tablets with the same appearance. Thickness gauges also help ensure that each production batch is usable with the package components you have chosen.
• ● When making tablets that are thicker than specified, it can be difficult to fit a specific amount into the capacity of a specific size bottle.
• ● Tablet strength is also important when counting tablets in a filling machine. This is because certain filling machines use a constant tablet thickness as a counting mechanism.
• ● Measure the height of a column of known amounts of pills. A row of tablets of similar height is then successively dropped into the bottle to complete the filling. If the calipers are different across batches, the result will be variation in counts.
• ● Other types of fillers may fail due to differences in tablet thickness. This is because using a tablet that exceeds the designed thickness may cause the tablet to wedge with the previously modified counting slot depth.
